Modise was voted as Footballer of the Year at the PSL awards ceremony in Midrand last night.

The award was voted for by the 16 PSL coaches from the 2007/08 season and is for a player who excels in all domestic competitions, not just the Absa Premiership, as well as for his national team.

Modise picked up R250 000 in prize-money, however there has been an outcry from fans who have registered their disapproval about the Bafana Bafana star on the KickOff.com website forum.

_quoteDa Gama responded by saying: “Who do they think deserve the award? According to information I received all the 16 coaches in PSL voted him as Footballer of the Year. What more do they want? For me, Teko Modise deserves the award,” the coach added.

Mpumalanga Black Aces’ coach Kenny Ndlazi says in his opinion Supersport United midfielder Elias Pelembe should have walked away with the prize.

“I understand that it was coaches in PSL who were given opportunity to vote for the Footballer of the Year. According to me the Footballer of the Year should be someone who has contributed much to his team’s success and therefore it should have gone to Elias Pelembe at Supersport United.

Bloemfontein Celtic’s number 1 supporter Botha Msila however, says he had narrowed it down to Modise and Pelembe and thus supports the judges’ decision.

“For me Elias Pelembe and Teko Modise were two players whom I thought deserved the Footballer of the Year award. Teko has been brilliant for both Pirates and Bafana Bafana and that’s why I am not surprised that he won the award.”

Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Joel Masilela and Free State Stars assistant coach Sammy Troughton also support the judges’ decision.

“That boy performed well for both Pirates and Bafana Bafana and to my mind there is no better player in the country at the moment,” says Masilela.
