Dumitru sees pitfalls in Bafana's performances

The veteran Romanian mentor says Bafana Bafana have not been convincing enough to win the trophy in Ghana in January next year and tips Angola and Tunisia as teams in Group D to advance to the next stage.

“All the groups are tough and it will be extremely difficult for Bafana Bafana to advance to the next stage. I fancy Angola and Tunisia as the teams to progress from the group.

“There is a lot to be done in the team to improve our performance. There’s no link between midfielders and strikers. There is a lack of support to strikers upfront. The defence is also a major worry,” says the former Kaizer Chiefs coach, who came out of retirement to lead South Africa to the last Afcon final in Egypt, where Bafana failed to score a single goal.

“However, let us see how the team performs in the next three games before making a final judgment,” he adds.

Dumitru has been based in South Africa for more than 20 years and was previously coach of Zambia and Swaziland.

Much travelled, he also had an unsuccessful stint as national coach in Namibia and worked in Turkey and the United States before moving to Africa.
