The Mannschaft took the lead in the 14th minute. Schulz got the run on Denzel Dumfries down the left flank before crossing the ball in to the box where Sane was on hand to capitalise on Matthijs de Light's untimely slip and fire the ball past a helpless Cillesen.
Ryan Babel almost equalised for the hosts in the 25th minute. After a long ball was flicked on, Ryan Babel got in behind the German defence but his shot was at a comfortable height for Manuel Neuer diving to his left, while the Fulham star was denied by Neuer two minutes later once again.
Joachim Low's side doubled their advantage in the 33rd minute. Antonio Rudiger played in Gnabry down the left-hand flank, with the Bayern Munich forward cutting inside past Virgil van Dijk and curling the ball brilliantly in to the top left-hand corner.
German left-back Schulz was having plenty of joy down the left-hand side and delivered a telling cross which wing-back Thilo Kehrer rose well to meet but his powerful header was well held on to by Cillesen.
The hosts made an ideal start to the second half, with De Ligt halving the deficit within two and a half minutes of the resumption of play. Memphis Depay was the creator, providing a wonderful delivery which the 19-year-old centre-back glanced with his head in to the top left-hand corner.
The Netherlands were looking a lot brighter in the second half, injecting more pace into their game and forcing their opponents back. In the 62nd minute, Germany made a hash of clearing their lines and Depay pounced, sidefooting the ball in to the bottom right-hand corner for the equaliser.
With the momentum having well and truly swung Netherlands' way, Low responded by bringing on Ilkay Gundogan for Leon Goretzka. With five minutes to go, Gnabry turned Van Dijk inside out but could only fire straight at Cillesen from a tight angle.
Gundogan made all the difference, playing a precise slide-rule pass through for fellow substitute Marco Reus who got to the byline before squaring the ball back to Schulz, who finished with aplomb on his weaker right-foot in to the bottom left-hand corner in the 90th minute to break Dutch hearts.
