The match saw Cosmos claim just their second league victory this season, with their only previous win in the 2007/08 Absa Premiership coming against Supersport United two months ago.

Cosmos’ Anthony Laffor scored early on from the penalty spot before late goals from Tshepo Moloto and Dikgang Mabalane handed Jomo Sono’s team three points, while Alton Meiring got a late consolation goal for Swallows.

Laffor got the game off to a fast start, scoring from the penalty spot as early as the sixth minute after a foul by Goodman Mazibuko on Geoffrey Massa in the 18-yard area.

Lefa Tsutsulupa, who had an effort off target for Swallows just before they conceded the opening goal, put another shot wide from within the penalty area in the 11th minute.

Just before the half hour mark, Godfrey Mahlangu attempted to double Cosmos’ lead, shooting over after latching onto Bamuza Sono’s corner kick.

Ramahlwe Mphahlele picked out Sandile Ndlovu with a cross in the 39th minute, but the striker’s header drifted off target. Davies Mwape then had a shot blocked by Mazibuko at the other end, leaving the visitors 1-0 ahead at the break.

Ten minutes into the second half, Cosmos ‘keeper Avril Phali was called upon to tip Tsutsulupa’s long range shot round around his upright. Ndlovu then headed wide of goal just a few moments later.

James Chamanga came within inches of bringing Swallows level on the 70 minute mark, hitting the post with a right footed shot.

Cosmos doubled their lead in the 89th minute, with Moloto converting Mabalane’s cross, before the midfielder turned finisher, scoring from close range to make it 3-0 to Ezenkosi.

Meiring pulled one back with a curling free kick that nestled in the top corner but it was too little, too late from the Birds.
