Fernandez breaks through at Bielefeld

Coach Michael Frontzeck, who replaced fired former Amakhosi mentor Ernst Middendorp, announced on Thursday that he was retaining Fernandez between the posts for their weekend match against Hamburg.

Fernandez has been battling to get regular game time at the club ever since he moved to Germany in the second half of 2007.

Frontzeck said that he had “a long and very good discussion” with captain and keeper Mathias Hain to justify his “difficult decision” to the No 1 minder.

The coach said that Fernandez had left an outstanding impression in his last game against Karlsruhe and that the South African had “used his chance well” while Hain was recovering from a broken rib injury.

Frontzeck said he did not want to change a winning combination. Hain accepted the coach’s decision.
