The game was rife with squandered chances, and it took a powerful drive by Free State Stars midfielder Prince Olomu in the 32nd minute to break the deadlock.

The goal spurned the home side on, and they exerted more pressure on the visitors, but they were let down by poor finishing.

The Tycoons finally drew level on the stroke of half time thanks to Luis Renteria, following a good corner by Koketso Mmotong. The ball was headed into Renteria’s path, and he flicked it into the back of the net to make the score 1-1.

The second half started with both teams attacking, but they couldn’t find the back of the net.

Sthembiso Ngcobo was denied the winner in the last minute of the referee’s optional time by a great save from Platinum Stars keeper Wayne Sandilands, and the game went to extra time.

Free State Stars were awarded a controversial penalty in the 130th minute when Tshepo Mashego clashed with Sandilands, but Diyo Sibisi’s shot was off target completely.

Free State Stars won 4-3 on penalties.
