Hunt, Gorowa renew heated rivalry

accreditation

Supersport United coach Gavin Hunt will renew his rivalry with Ian Gorowa, his opposite number and successor at Moroka Swallows, when the Birds host Matsatsantsa at the Germiston Stadium in an Absa Premiership match on Friday evening.

Kick off is at 20h00.

Following Supersport’s 2-1 defeat of Swallows in a SAA Supa8 quarterfinal in August earlier this season, it was reported that Gorowa punched Hunt in a post match scuffle.

The animosity between the two men will be further tested when their respective teams, separated by just two places and a single point on the Absa Premiership table, meet in what should be an intriguing encounter at Germiston.

Swallows make a welcome return to home soil after playing four of their last five league matches on the road, especially as their last outing saw them ending on the wrong side of a 4-1 score line against log leaders Ajax in Cape Town.

Gorowa’s team are unbeaten at home in the league, though they have only played three matches as hosts in the Premiership and Supersport defeated them at Olympia Park in the cup game mentioned above that was designated as a home fixture for the Birds.

Supersport, conversely, have not won on the road in the league this season but again, such has been the strange nature of the fixtures that they have only played three of their nine Absa Premiership games away from home.

United will come into the game on a high after their morale boosting and richly deserved 3-1 win over Orlando Pirates last week that suggested Hunt’s team are just beginning to find some form after a sluggish start to the campaign.

Since the inception of the Premier Soccer League in 1996/97 Swallows hold a statistical edge, having won ten matches to Supersport’s seven (with five draws), though Matsatsantsa, including cup games, have won three of the last four meetings of the teams, and took four points off the Birds last season.
