Innocent Maela provides insight into log leaders Orlando Pirates' dressing room mood

Orlando Pirates defender Innocent Maela says the dressing room is abuzz at present but the likes of Happy Jele and others are ensuring they remain grounded.

But the Buccaneers have certainly grinded out nine points from their last three matches to have them feeling this way, while the defending champions are in no way guaranteed of obtaining the necessary numbers to surpass them.

With this in mind, it is understandable that the mood amongst the table toppers has improved drastically over the course of the last week, and Maela has no shame in admitting it.

However, the 26-year-old, who – like several others in the Bucs squad – is in line for his first piece of top flight silverware, has assured that there is still some humility being preached by those who have tasted glory before.

“Obviously the mood is good, and the excitement is there, but we also have people who are experienced – Musa Nyatama, Happy Jele, Mpho Makola, Thabo [Matlaba] – people that have been there [in title winning times], who keep us grounded,” said Maela.

“They emphasise that we need to stay humble, listen to the coaches and make sure that we keep going and keep improving.

“We can see that it’s close but we also need to focus on the next match.”
