Italy to field second string side

Donadoni, who coached Italy to a 2-0 win over Georgia in a Euro 2008 qualifier in Genoa on Saturday, decided not to risk his key players ahead of next month’s crunch qualifier at Group B leaders Scotland.

Instead, he has filled his squad for the match against Bafana Bafana in Sienna full of fringe players, including Paolo Cannavaro (pictured), brother of World Cup-winning captain Fabio, who has received his first call-up.

Napoli defender Cannavaro (26), joins AC Milan forward Alberto Gilardino in the squad while Juventus striker Vincenzo Iaquinta is included after missing the Georgia game with a fever. Alessandro Del Piero and Filippo Inzaghi have again been left out.

Italy are second in their qualifying group one point behind Scotland and just a point ahead of France with two games remaining. Only the top two go through to the finals.
