The Ivorians were simply too powerful for their opponents, who had a lot of the ball, but not the guile to make their possession count.
Kader Keita opened the scoring on 26 minutes, before Didier Drogba doubled the advantage with 20 minutes to play. Salomon Kalou scored a brace inside 10 minutes, before Bakary Kone completed the rout with a thunderous drive.
1 mins: We’re underway in Sekondi.
6 mins: Dindane with an early chance to shoot, but he can’t get his shot away and Guinea clear.
11 mins: A quiet start to the game, but Guinea have seen a lot of the early ball. No shots on goal though in the first 11 minutes.
16 mins: Bangoura almost finds space at the back post as Guinea keep up the pressure.
21 mins: YELLOW CARD for Zayatte for a foul on Kalou. He can’t have any complaints. Finally the Ivorians get an effort of goal as Dindane headers wide from the free-kick.
26 mins: GOAL! Great strike from Keite, who collects the ball on the right before driving into the box and firing low past Camara.
31 mins: Guinea look a little devoid of ideas when they have the ball. The Ivory Coast have looked pretty comfortable in defence so far. They are definitely missing suspended skipper Pascal Feindouno.
40 mins: Guinea are still applying most of the pressure in terms of ball possession, you feel a good chance will come sooner rather than later.
HALFTIME: Dindane and Kalou both have excellent chances in the same movement but the brilliance of Kemoko Camara in the Guinea goal keeps them at bay. At the other end, Bangoura does brilliant to get his shot away from the edge of the area, but Barry saves. Keita almost gets his second on the stroke of halftime, while Camara saves superbly from Drogba. Otherwise, that was a pretty uninspiring 45 minutes of football to tell you the truth. Let’s hope for better in the second half.
46 mins: And we’re back underway …
53 mins: Guinea start the half applying pressure on the Ivorian goal., but they are still struggling to make Barry work.
60 mins: Kalou should have made it 2-0 from the corner, but he heads down and the ball bounces over the bar. Karamoko Cisse replaces Youla.
67 mins: Jabi is inches away from the free-kick, while Barry dives head-first into the post in his attempt to stop the ball. He seems to be OK.
69 mins: Dindane has just produced what could be the miss of the tournament. Yaya Toure puts him free with a run on goal, he easily rounds goalkeeper Kemoko Camara and, with the open goal at his mercy, inexplicably knocks the ball into the side-netting. Incredible miss.
70 mins: GOAL! A superb one-two with Boka puts Drogba clear and he shows Dindane how to finish. That should be game, set and match.
72 mins: GOAL! Almost a carbon copy of the last goal. This time Drogba lays it on for Kalou, who rounds the keeper and has the easiest of finishes. Guinea are falling apart here.
79 mins: Bakary Kone replaces Drogba, while Emerse Fae comes on for Keita. Aruna Kone does brilliantly on the right and cuts the ball back for Kalou, but his goal-bound shot is saved by the knee of Kemoko Camara.
82 mins: GOAL! Sheer brilliance. A marauding attack sees Yaya Toure reach the byline and cut the ball back into the centre where there were three Ivorians ready to pounce. Kalou puts the ball into an unguarded net.
84 mins: Bakaray and Aruna Kone combine to unlock the Guinea defence again, but the final pass from the latter just evades his teammate and the Syli Nationale can clear.
85 mins: GOAL! And that’s 5-0. Bakary Kone finishes from 30-yards with a thunderous shot. It has been an absolute master-class in finishing tonight.
FULLTIME: What had looked like a tight contest ended in a route as the Ivory Coast simply demolished Guinea in the final 20 minutes. Can anyonw stop these Ivorians?
