Kaizer Chiefs legend Thabo Mooki speaks to KICK OFF

‘Tsiki-Tsiki’ tells KICK OFF he: “didn’t make a formal announcement that I was retiring from football”.

The former star says he will reveal “everything” about his future in January, but says “it’s not like I’m just sitting – I train with guys like Clint Sephadi.”

Many fans assumed Mooki would slip into the coaching team at Chiefs, but he says: “I don’t want to do something and then realise I have not love for it. I don’t want to do something just because that’s what footballers do when they retire.”

KICK OFF also speaks to Chiefs chairman Kaizer Motaung about the Mooki benefit match that was touted, but never materialised.

Motaung insists the situation is not the club’s fault: “Our marketing team has always tried to organise the match, but unfortunately [Mooki has] left everything to his managers or agents, and these are the type who make it difficult for us.”

  • his close relationship with Scara Ngobese: “I wish he’d realised how good he was”.
  • who he admires in the current Chiefs set-up: “I rate players like George Lebese and Mandla Masango”.
  • Bafana Bafana then and now: “During my time we had Jomo Sono … who was similar to Pitso”.
