Kaizer Chiefs on Wednesday announced yet another departure in goalkeeper Virgil Vries as they continue their player exodus.
When talking of dumping, one generally thinks of waste products. However, Chiefs management need to be asking some serious questions of their transfer policy as they released a fifth player this season to take their total over the last three years to upwards of 36 players.
Amakhosi have become synonymous with mass axings at the end of each season, and this one has proven no different as they remain on course for their lowest points tally in the PSL era.
Vries has now followed Hendrick Ekstein, Kgotso Malope, Gustavo Paez and Godfrey Walusimbi in the clear-out at Naturena over the past six months – two of whom lasted less than a single season.
At the end of last season, William Twala, Sibusiso Khumalo, Keagan Buchanan, Edmore Chirambadare, Michelle Katsvairo, Brilliant Khuzwayo and Tsepo Masilela were all sent through the exit door.
The season before also saw Siyanda Xulu, Camaldine Abraw, Edward Manqele, David Zulu, Siphelele Mthembu, Lewis Macha, Lucky Baloyi and Enocent Mkhabela axed from the club, while George Lebese was later sold to Mamelodi Sundowns.
In 2016, Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Morgan Gould, Reyaad Pieterse, Siboniso Gaxa, Keagan Ritchie, Ovidy Karuru, Levy Mokgothu, Simphiwe Mtsweni, Shandukani Mulovhedzi, Ivan Bukenya, Sula Matovu, Chris Matombo, Zitha Macheke, Bongani Ndulula and Philani Cele were all offloaded.
During this period, the club have also made several technical team changes with Steve Komphela, Doctor Khumalo, Patrick Mabedi, John Paintsil, Rob Hutting and Giovanni Solinas all having come and gone as well.
It would appear that The Glamour Boys aren’t done, however, with Bongolwethu Jayiya also rumoured to be on his way out, while Joseph Molangoane and Ryan Moon have yet to renew their contracts.
