Kgatla lifts Tycoons' top award

This was announced when the club held its end of season lunch in Sun City this week.

Addressing the team’s directors, Royal Bafokeng Nation representatives, club management, sponsors and players, club chairman George Khunou made a stern call to Royal Bafokeng nation’s councilors to help influence communities to rally behind the team in the coming season.

He was reacting to a passionate plea made earlier by club coach Miguel Gamondi who said it was painful for the players to play at Olympia Park stadium in front of empty stands.

Khunou said many changes were on the way for the coming season including an announcement of what he termed a ‘big sponsor’ to take the team to another high level.

Khunou said he was pleased that a team once regarded as candidates for relegation had made such progress finishing on the 10th position with 10 wins, 10 draws and 10 losses.

Club CEO Larry Brookstone said the appointment of Gamondi and his assistant Cavin Johnson was the best thing to happen to the club during the past season, “When we started playing well under the current technical staff, we went on to beat the likes of Al-Ahly at home, something never achieved by any soccer club in South Africa and as a result our brand got noticed and admired all over Africa.”

Brookstone said the club will in the near future launch a new technical sponsor which has started delivering some of the playing and training technical needs of the team.

He said the players honored should be humbled by the awards as it was a difficult task to finalize category winners for the awards.

He encouraged the rest of the players in the squad to work harder in the coming season and wished them a good rest for the few weeks of the off season.

Brookstone added that the coming season will start on a tough note when Tycoons host Tunisia’s CS Sfaxien in the first leg of the fourth round of the Caf Confederations Cup on the weekend of July 11-14.
