Komphela has been tasked to watch the Nigerians when they play Austria in an international friendly in Vienna on May 27.

Safa CEO Raymond Hack says Komphela will then report back to the Bafana senior team technical department.

“Safa has decided not to send any of the coaches in the senior team but Steve Komphela instead. We have decided to do this as the Nigerians are in more or less the same situation as we are, playing a relatively new team under a new coach.”

Nigeria is using the Austrian friendly to sharpen up against Bafana ahead of the start of the combined 2010 Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifiers.

Unlike South Africa, the Nigerians have named a 27-member squad that features only European-based players and includes the likes of Portsmouth FA Cup hero Nwankwo Kanu along with Kayode Odejayi of Barnsley, who also had a fantastic run in the same competition.

The star-studded Super Eagles team that is a mixture of experience and upcoming stars is being coached by former Orlando Pirates’ coach Shuaibu Amodu.

Everton striker Victor Anichebe, overlooked for the Nations Cup finals, has found his way back into the team that has giant striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni as the main target man upfront.
