LaLiga match report Espanyol v Real Madrid 27 January 2019

Los Blancos went ahead after four minutes lead when Diego Lopez punched Luka Modric’s effort into the path of Karim Benzema who slotted into an unguarded net.

In the 15th minute, Sergio Ramos took advantage of Rubi’s well-documented troubles at defending set-pieces when he leaped high to nod home from Modric's cross.

The visitors got themselves back in the clash on 25 minutes Leo Baptistao smashed the ball into the roof of the net from close range.

Espanyol's comeback suffered setback, after Benzema’s low curler crept underneath the arms of Lopez to restore Real's two-goal cushion on the stroke of halftime.

Los Blancos continued from where they left off in the first half, as Benzema released Modric following an exchange of passes, but the Croatian steered his effort around the post by Lopez on 57 minutes.

In the 64th minute, Gareth Bale replaced an in-effective Vinicius Junior and it took the Welshman three minutes to make an impact as he pounced on chaotic defending to make it 4-1.

Benzema came to the fore again after he ghosted past Luis Lopez before picking out Dani Ceballos, who failed to hit the target from close-range on 70 minutes.

Two minutes later, Raphael Varane saw red after bringing down Pablo Piatti on the edge of the box as the last man.

Espanyol's offensive persistence finally paid dividends when Roberto Rosales sent a fine half-volley past Thibaut Courtois in the final ten minutes.

Los Blancos were able to see out the latter stages of the half to claim a vital victory in their pursuit of FC Barcelona.
