Messi, 31, came off the bench to inspire a dramatic comeback for Barca against Villarreal on Tuesday evening.

The Argentine forward was rested from the start but was sent on by Ernesto Valverde just after the hour-mark and the Blaugrana conceded their fourth goal of the evening minutes later.

However, his 89th-minute free-kick sparked a dramatic comeback and took his overall tally to 414 LaLiga goals, as per ESPN.

That tally is now the joint record for most league goals scored in the history of the top five leagues along with Ronaldo.

The 34-year-old has scored 84 goals in the Premier League, 311 in La Liga and 19 in Serie A.
