Liverpool return to third in the Premier League with win over West Brom at The Hawthorns

The Baggies wasted two decent chances in the opening quarter of the match, with Matt Phillips mis-hitting his shot in the opening minutes before again failing to find target with 15 minutes gone as he sliced wide from a promising position.

The hosts would eventually be made to pay for those missed opportunities as the Reds take the lead on the stroke of half-time, Lucas flicking on James Milner’s free-kick to find Roberto Firmino, who made no mistake to poke home unmarked.

Milner had a good chance to grab a goal of his own in the second-half but skewed wide from a really promising position, although that proved one of the few chances the supporters were treated to after the break.

That seemed to suit Liverpool just fine, though, as Jurgen Klopp’s men eventually went on to claim the three priceless points, largely thanks to Simon Mignolet’s late save to deny Phillips after he had been played through one-on-one.
