Luis Suarez: Barcelona's Lionel Messi still a cut above the rest

Portugal and Real Madrid superstar Ronaldo is coming off what he has described "the best season of my career" after he won the Champions League with his club and lifted the European Championship with the national team.

He also notched up 35 goals and 11 assists in La Liga while Messi scored 26 goals with 18 assists.

Many believe Ronaldo is clear favourite to win the Ballon d'Or award, but Suarez feels his Barca team-mate is still the best despite not winning the big titles last season.

"He [Ronaldo] won the Champions League and Euro 2016, but in my view, there’s no debate needed. Lionel Messi is the best player in the world — aside from the titles," he said.

He added: "He is the cut above the rest in every match. Those stats alone should guarantee him the Ballon d’Or."
