Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena gives insight into Kutumela addition

Kutumela sealed a 5-year deal in a high-profile move from Maritzburg United after helping The Team of Choice avoid relegation last season.

The Limpopo-born striker is set to join an already formidable attacking department of Kermit Erasmus, Peter Shalulile and Gift Motupa.

Mokwena, who worked with Kutumela previously at Orlando Pirates, believes the attacker is an exciting addition to an already star-studded squad.

"He is a boy that we are excited to have brought in because he is a profile of player that we don't have," Mokwena said.

"Technically, Kutumela allows us a lot more options within our frontline because he can play as a 9, he can play as a 10, which I think probably is his best position, and he can play on the left and the right.

"We saw at Maritzburg; he was even deployed in certain moments, in some games on the left or right-wing. So he can do the job there because he has a very good profile that allows him to be adaptive to different positions and the demands of those positions, but for us, we brought him in as a number 10."

Despite boasting a squad overflowing with talent, Mokwena revealed that Kutumela fills a void in the squad.

"We felt we didn't have an attacking midfielder that can play as a 9 when we are attacking and maybe even as an eight," Mokwena added.

"When we're without possession of the ball and with Kutumela's ability to not just find and navigate space allows him to be sort of a ten that can utilise spaces created by lots of movements by our centre forwards.

"But also in certain moments, you can rely on his high energy levels and extremely tenacious work ethic off the ball to assist with your pressing schemes and his ability to reinforce and overload the midfield.

"So we're excited about him, and we know what he gives us, both in defence and attack and also the quality we needed in set-piece situations.

"So we're happy with the addition of Kutumela, and his ability to create and score goals for us will come in very handy."

Mamelodi Sundowns open their 2021/22 campaign with a highly-anticipated clash against Kaizer Chiefs in the MTN8 quarter-finals at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday.
