Italy ended Armenia’s World Cup hopes midweek, earning a 2-2 draw with goals from Alessandro Florenzi and Balotelli in the last 20 minutes of the match.
The AC Milan star almost scored a second in stoppage time, shooting just wide after making a solo run down the entire length of the field and taking on the Armenia defence on his own.
However, the 23-year-old striker returned to his club with a thigh injury, and may miss Saturday’s Serie A clash with Udinese and Tuesday’s Champions League fixture at San Siro.
“AC Milan announces that Mario Balotelli is suffering from a vastus intermedius muscle injury to the right thigh,” a statement on the club’s website reads.
“The player will be monitored in the coming days in order to better define the extent of the problem and determine the prognosis.”
Balotelli has three Serie A goals in four games this season, and two in the Champions League. He has missed Milan’s last three League fixtures through red card suspension.
