Club coach Fadlu Davids also picked up the KZN Coach of the Year prize.

Maritzburg and Davids were recognised for their efforts after the club finished a best-ever fourth in the Absa Premiership and reached a maiden cup final where they lost to Free State Stars in the Nedbank Cup in 2017/18.

The Team of Choice also recorded their biggest win last season with a 4-0 rout of Bloemfontein Celtic at Harry Gwala Stadium , while a number of their players won individual PSL honours.

Xulu accepted the KZN Team of the Year award at a function at the Durban ICC in the week.

"It is something that we went through last season. It was a great season for us and it showed that working together we can achieve more," said Xulu, who won the PSL Defender of the Season prize last term.

"When you talk about last season you talk about the unity we had. You talk about the brilliant players we had and this season we can achieve even more.

"What we did last season we can [do again], for sure. I'm very confident about that. The squad we have, I mean it is a brilliant squad. It's a very young squad and a talented squad ... we just need to correct here and there.

"With experience I know a lot of things goes along with it. It comes with unity, it comes with a lot of hard work."

Maritzburg won their first game of 2018/19 last weekend against Celtic at their sixth attempt in all competitions.

Xulu is confident the side can now gain some momentum and rise from 14th place on the standings. They next visit neighbours AmaZulu at King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi on Tuesday night.

"For sure, it was only going to take one win for us to get back to winning ways. I think we needed it more than anything," Xulu added.
