Mathebula has been struggling with an ankle injury for the past week and aggravated it during training session again this week.
By Friday morning the Amakhosi medical team were still not sure whether the former Dynamos midfielder will be ready for action.
_quoteChiefs physio David Milner tells KickOff.com that they will look at Mathebula's injury again later in the day and see whether he passes a fitness test.
Meanwhile, Amakhosi defender Fabian McCarthy tells KickOff.com that winning the Derby will be crucial if they are to squeeze into a Top 8 finish.
“The fact that we have had a new coach this season is no excuse for where we are at the moment. I think the standard in the League in general has climbed and there are now other teams that are capable of matching us on the field,” says McCarthy.
The experienced defender with 11 seasons in the PSL behind him, declares the weekend action will keep the fans on the edge of their seats.
“Trust my words this is one game that will be a cracker,” he says.
“I used to play a lot of games in Mmabatho when I was growing up there and it will be very special for me to register a victory there.”
McCarthy is also hoping that collecting all three points will be an early birthday present for him as he is due to celebrate his 31st birthday on Tuesday.
Judging by what KickOff.com saw at training this week the former Bloemfontein Celtic and Mamelodi Sundowns defender will partner Mokete Tsotetsi in central defence, with Jimmy Tau on the right and Onismor Bhasera on the left.
