McCarthy returns to boost Bafana

accreditation

National coach Carlos Alberto Parreira announced his squad at Safa House in Johannesburg this morning, with McCarthy the most significant inclusion following his long-standing battle with Safa.

Parreira revealed he had met the Blackburn Rovers striker recently and McCarthy assured the Brazilian that he wants to represent South Africa again.

The 29-year-old’s return to the international fold could not have come at a better time, given Bafana Bafana’s lack of goals in recent games.

Other notable inclusions in Parreira’s 22-man squad are striker Thembinkosi ‘Terror’ Fanteni and his Ajax Cape Town teammate Brett Evans, as well as Moroka Swallows’ Bevan Fransman.

The match will also form part of Caf’s 50th anniversary celebrations, while the same squad will also participate in a friendly match against Uruguay at Ellis Park on September 12.

The squad is:

  • Goalkeepers: Rowen Fernandez, Calvin Marlin

  • Defenders: Aaron Mokoena, Bradley Carnell, Cyril Nzama, Nasief Morris, Vuyo Mere, Brett Evans, Bevan Fransman, Benson Mhlongo

  • Midfielders: Steven Pienaar, Delron Buckley, MacBeth Sibaya, Papi Zothwane, Surprise Moriri, Siyabonga Nkosi, Benedict Vilakazi, Dillon Sheppard, Teko Modise

  • Strikers: Benni McCarthy, Thembinkosi Fanteni, Siyabonga Nomvete.
