National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) George Ledwaba discloses, according to a report by Sapa that the reason the workers were striking is that they are not getting the same remuneration as workers at other 2010 construction sites.
“Management is saying it (the stadium) falls under the building industry and therefore the wages are calculated in terms of the bargaining council [for that sector]," said Ledwaba.
He said all stadiums should fall under the civil engineering sector, so the rate of pay should be calculated according to that sectoral determination.
Ledwaba said the strike had not been applied for and was therefore illegal.
NUM may call off the strike for two weeks in order to file for a legal strike action, he said. This, however, would depend on the outcome of tomorrow's negotiations.
