Middendorp shown the door

The 49-year-old trainer, who had a contract until 2009 at the Bundesliga club, was shown the door on Monday afternoon.

It follows Arminia Bielefeld’s 6-1 thrashing at the hands of Borussia Dortmund on Friday. The match was only the second appearance in the line-up for Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Rowen Fernandez.

What this means for the German careers of Fernandez and his compatriots, Siyabonga Nkosi and Sibusiso Zuma, remains unclear at this stage.

Bielefeld are struggling just one point above the relegation zone ion 15th place in the 18-team Bundesliga. The side have won just one of their last 11 matches. In September they lost 8-1 at Werder Bremen.

Middendorp took over at Bielefeld in March after being sacked by Kaizer Chiefs, winning five matches in eight games to help the club dramatically stave off relegation.
