More money for World Cup support systems

Delivering his annual Budget speech in Parliament, Manuel said the police force would increase from 163 000 members to 200 000, a 22 percent increase.

In addition, 40 new police stations would be built.

The Minister said the World Cup has also helped with the upgrading of the public transport system.

“Spurred on by their 2010 Fifa World Cup commitments, our larger cities have begun to modernise public transport arrangements,” he said.

Manuel announced that up to R60bn will be made available to support the financing of Eskom’s R343bn investment programme to tackle the power shortages.
