More SA girls going for US trials

accreditation

The trio Veronica Phewa, Rose Jijane and Lena Masebo jets off to the US for a rare six-month trial at FC Indiana – a club ranked fifth in the world.

Initially, reports were that only Phewa was going, however, Fran Hilton-Smith tells snl24.com/kickoff that this is a rare opportunity for the players to try their luck in the highly competitive league of the US.

“From what I have gathered they will probably start off in the reserve team and if they impress they will then move up to the first team.

“What has happened is that they have basically signed but will have to be put on a six-month trial before they are offered a longer contract. They are the first ever South African players to link up with a top league team and this will augur well for the national team because the more players we have playing competitive football regularly the better.

“The three are our most senior players and this is an opportunity of a lifetime. Rose and Veronica are the most capped players in Banyana, both having started their careers in the senior team aged 16. They really deserve this chance,” says Hilton-Smith.

Masebo has come through the ranks at Basetsana while Jijane has been the backbone of the Banyana defence.

The left-footed Phewa has been a regular in attack for Banyana for a while now.
