Mothibantwa was the only scorer on the day, helping his team secure its first victory in an official game this season.
Speaking to snl24.com/kickoff after the team’s arrival in Johannesburg from Durban last night, the Bloemfontein-born midfielder expressed his delight at securing the Mighty Buccaneers a berth in the quarterfinals of the lucrative tournament.
Bucs have been drawn against Moroka Swallows for the next stage of the tournament.
“I am very excited about winning the game against Thanda. It was very tough, but I am happy that at the end of the day my goal helped Pirates advance.
“It was not about individual performance, but the team effort that allowed us to go past Thanda.”
Mothibantwa has admitted that the victory has somewhat eased the pressure as Pirates had gone four games in the league without a win and the victory over Thanda was understandably met with wild celebrations from everyone associated with the team.
“It’s true we have been under pressure to deliver as results were not going our way in the previous games. But we have been working hard, playing well, creating chances, but somehow could not put the ball in the net.
“But now having finally hit the back of the net, I have no doubt that goals will start to flow for us this season.”
Mothibantwa said their main focus now is on their Absa Premiership game against the Dube Birds set for Coca Cola Park on Wednesday.
“Its going to be an exciting game as both teams are in high spirits after winning their games on Sunday. Both teams are also playing good football and I am sure the crowd will enjoy the mid-week match.”
