Ezenkosi advanced to the quarterfinals after holding the Clever Boys to a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes and then going on to win 5-4 in the sudden death shootout.

Sono, though, says he was always confident in his side's ability to withstand the threat of the Absa Premiership title hopefuls, and grew even more so when the game headed for penalties.

"I think we planned well, we knew Wits are very difficult especially with their two fullbacks – Hlanti and Gaxa – so we stopped the two of them," Sono said on SuperSport.

"We put a lot of pressure on Gaxa, our goal came from his side because he has not been playing for a long time and I told Matsi 'when you get to him, just push it and run,' because Matsi's got speed and it worked out.

"We took them to extra-time, we knew that if we go to penalties, I trust my keeper. I've seen him so many times with penaties."

The Cosmos club boss added that the return of two of his main players played a key part in their performance as he now leaves their cup fate in the hands of his troops and how badly they want it.

He then also called for a repeat performance in their league clash against First Division runaway leaders Thanda Royal Zulu on Saturday.

"I felt good about [going to extra-time], I was not panicking at all and I knew this team is very, very fit, especially having Junior and Angelo coming back from injuries. We knew we would compete with Wits," he went on.

"I'm happy with [our progression to the quarter-finals] and my players want it, so it's up to them."

He concluded: "If they can take this form into the next game against Thanda then they will do well."
