Second-half goals from Bongi Ntuli and Somila Ntsundwana guided AmaZulu to a 2-0 win over SuperSport United at the King Zwelithini Stadium.
The match started at a high tempo with both sides finding spaces in the last third but Bradley Grobler came the closest first to opening the scoring for United in the 20th minute with a great strike that was saved by Usuthu goalkeeper Siyabonga Mbatha following a flick-on inside the box by Mxolisi Macuphu.
Siyethemba Sithebe almost broke the deadlock for Cavin Johnson’s charges in the 24th minute after he forced a save from Matsatsantsa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams that ricocheted off the crossbar from a long range strike.
Macuphu had a glorious chance to finally find the breakthrough for the visitors in the 32nd minute where he exchanged passes with Grobler inside the box and with the net gaping, he unleashed a strike that was cleared off the line.
The sides were going at each other with pace in the closing stages of the first half but the two shot-stoppers, Mbatha and Williams were on top of their game and the first stanza ended without goals as a result.
Bonginkosi Ntuli found the breakthrough for AmaZulu nine minutes into the second stanza after racing clear to slot home the opener following through ball from Ovidy Karuru, 1-0.
Aubrey Modiba almost levelled matters for Kaitano Tembo’s men in the 63rd minute with a cracking strike that unfortunately rattled the crossbar.
United were desperate for the equaliser with 15 minutes remaining and they brought on Ghampani Lungu in place of Onismor Bhasera to add more numbers in attack.
However, Somila Ntsundwana sealed all the three points for Usuthu in the last minute as he made it 2-0 with a low shot past Williams following a counter-attack.
