Cape Town City piled more misery on Chippa United with a 2-0 victory in the Absa Premiership on Friday evening.
Chippa made five changes as Zitha Macheke, Gladwin Shitolo, Andile Mbenyane, Thabo Rakhale and Lerato Manzini returned, whilst Teko Modise and Siphelele Mthembu came in for City.
City, who had just received three points from the league following their abandoned clash at Bloemfontein Celtic, were let off the hook four minutes in as Manzini missed from close-range.
Within the 14th minute, City looked promising from the wings as Thamsanqa Mkhize’s cross found Surprise Ralani who failed to profit.
As the half wore on, both sides struggled to open up each other, until the last tenth minutes saw Rakhale launching at Peter Leeuwenburgh who gathered easily
From a tight angle, Tercious Malepe darted into the box a minute before the break and fired into the side-netting.
Both sides went for changes during the break, with Kurt Lentjies in place for Rakhale while Gift Links replaced Ralani.
Just like the first half, the home side were off to a strong start, with Leeuwenburgh forced to go down 53 minutes in to keep out Macheke’s low shot.
City came close to the opener 65 minutes in, but Zuikle Kewuti failed to head home a delivery from Links.
As Chippa went through the motions, City found the breakthrough 79 minutes in through a snap-shot from Shane Roberts.
The victory was confirmed after Links struck the far corner five minutes from time to end off a wonderful day for the Blue Army who move up to third spot.
