A first-half brace from Knox Mutizwa inspired Golden Arrows to a 2-1 victory over Free State Stars in the Absa Premiership.

A couple of changes from Steve Komphela’s side ruffled their feathers, as Nkosinathi Mathiane, Frank Motebejane, Richard Matloga and Danny Venter were drafted in, while Stars re-called in Relebogile Mokhuoane.

The two teams made a slow start earlier, with Stars missing a great chance to go ahead on 10 minutes after Eleazar Rodgers failed to direct an inviting delivery on target.

As such, Arrows made the visitors pay after 18 minutes as Mutizwa converted from the penalty spot after being hacked down by Samkelo Mbambo inside the area.

The side from Lamontville increased their tally on 25 minutes after Mutizwa’s curling free-kick went over the wall and into the near post.

Stars quickly halved the deficit eight minutes later as Sibusiso Hlubi’s free-kick from the edge of the area strayed beyond Arrows shot-stopper Maximilian Mbaeva.

From another free-kick, Stars searched for an equaliser a minute later but Yusuf Jappie’s low attempt from the far side was easily collected by Mbaeva.

Upon resumption to the second half, the travelling side made a more lively start with Jappie and Rodgers pinning the hosts in their own half.

With Stars posing all the questions, Komphela switched formations on 59 minutes, bringing off Nduduzo Sibiya for Sphamandla Sabelo.

Ea Lla Koto responded with their first change on 63 minutes, as Mpho Khabane made way for Nyiko Mobbie.

As time flew by, Arrows failed to grab a third when on 78 minutes, Sabelo flashed an inviting opportunity wide.

In added time, Stars looked for an equaliser but Jappie’s free-kick proved no issue to Mbaeva who collected comfortably for the points that moves Abafana Besthende up to ninth place.
