Kaizer Chiefs missed the chance to seal their top eight spot in the Absa Premiership once again as they were held to a 1-1 draw by relegation-haunted Free State Stars.
Ernst Middendorp made a few changes to the side that lost against Bloemfontein Celtic the last time out, as the likes of Khama Billiat, Leonardo Castro and Andriamirado Andrianarimanana returned to the side among five adjustments.
Chiefs settled the better of the two sides in the early stages but they kept possession mostly in their own half, where they could not hurt Stars.
Ea Lla Koto had their first shot in anger in the 33rd minute through a long range strike by Paulus Masehe that was powerful but swerved away from goal.
The visitors were knocking on the door in the closing stages of the first stanza, and they nearly snatched the lead a minute before the break with a curling free-kick from Sibusiso Hlubi that was reaching for the top corner but Amakhosi shot-stopper Bruce Bvuma made a great save to ensure the first half ends without goals.
Shortly after the halftime break Stars capitalised on a mistake at the back by Ramahlwe Mphahlele whose poor back-pass was intercepted by Harris Tchilimbou who picked out Hlubi for the close-range finish.
The hosts were awarded a penalty in the 64th minute after Castro went down inside the box following a challenge from Sifiso Mbhele, and the Stars players threatened to leave the field in, but eventually they were persuaded to return as Daniel Cardoso converted the spot-kick with a powerful strike to make it 1-1.
Tchilimbou should have restored the lead for Ea Lla Koto in the 73rd minute after he latched onto a cross in the, but he rushed his move and struck his shot unbelievably over the bar.
Chiefs were under pressure with ten minutes remaining as Stars were pushing for the winner and in the last five minutes Nikola Kavazovic brought on lanky striker Eleazar Rodgers in place of midfielder Yussuf Jappie to threaten Amakhosi with long balls.
In the end, neither side were clinical enough to collect all three points as the spoils were shared on the day as Chiefs extend their winless streak to six matches, while Ea Lla Koto will keep on fighting for survival in their last match.
