Augusto Palacios gives advice to Benni McCarthy after 'cruel' Cape Town City sacking

McCarthy was shown the back door at City over the weekend after guiding the club to two cup finals during his tenure. The former Orlando Pirates striker won the MTN8 trophy with the Citizens last season.

Palacios says McCarthy should use his achievements at City as an inspiration to achieve more in his coaching career.

"He is a very good coach. He showed during his stay at Cape Town City that he is a good coach with a lot of potential," Palacios tells

"He has been to two cup finals and won one. He has helped the club qualify for the top eight for the past two seasons. That's a great achievement for him.

"It's an unfortunate situation in South Africa where we don't give patience to coaches. In his short period with the club he achieved so much.

"What has happened to him is the same that has happened to the Bayern Munich coach [Niko Kovac, who was also recently sacked]. Coaching is a cruel job.

"He must know these things happen internationally, so everything hat has happened with him at Cape Town City was a learning experience and take all the positives with him.

"My advice to him is not to rush to join any other club just for the sake of coaching but he must make his choice wisely. He must not hurry. He has many years of coaching ahead of him.

"What he can do in the meantime is watch more games, speak to coaches and continue learning whilst you are watching the game from the stands."

McCarthy is yet to announce the next step in his career after leaving City on Sunday.
