Baroka gunning for first home win of the season against Free State Stars

Bottom-placed Baroka, who are four points behind Stars, have drawn seven and lost five of their previous 12 matches as hosts since arriving in the PSL.

Baroka play their 13th home game in pursuit of the three points that will enable them to move away from the electric chair for at least the next 24 hours.

A win for Bakgaga (on 18 points) will take them off the foot of the standings as Highlands Park (on 20 points) are only in action tomorrow at Ajax Cape Town in yet another fixture featuring the bottom four.

Rather strange for Baroka is that all of their three wins have come on the road against opponents that they were least expected to take points from.

First they overcame Platinum Stars at the Royal Bafokeng in September. They then recorded a shock 2-1 win over Cape Town City in the Mother City the following month before staging another surprise by downing SuperSport United at Mbombela Stadium at the beginning of this month which ended Matsatsantsa’s 19-game unbeaten run.

A blessing in disguise for Baroka could be that after this evening’s game they will only have two more home games against Bloemfontein Celtic and Highlands Park.

The other five remaining games against Maritzburg United, Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns, Golden Arrows and Ajax Cape Town will all be away.

Mphahlele adds that bonuses for players will only be paid if the team survives relegation.

“The bonuses will be paid when the team survives because that is when the job will have been done and completed the way we want. The mission is to avoid relegation,” says Mphahlele.
