Chiefs on Thursday put an end to media speculation as they wrapped up a three-year deal with Hunt and formally announced his arrival in Soweto.

The 56-year-old, who is the second most decorated coach behind only Pitso Mosimane in the PSL era, had been one of several candidates linked with succeeding Ernst Middendorp, who had been sacked last week.

Among those that some Amakhosi fans and former players were calling for was McCarthy, who has been without a job since parting ways with Cape Town City in November last year.

The former Orlando Pirates striker, who is a self-confessed Glamour Boy at heart, has now applauded the club's appointment of a coach who gave him his breakthrough back in 1995 at Seven Stars.

"Congratulations to coach Gavin Hunt for the appointment," commented McCarthy on one of Chiefs' latest Instagram posts of their new mentor.

"Knowing this man and what he’s about, I have no doubt he’s gonna bring a lot of smiles on the fans faces and most definitely success that’s badly needed. Good luck and all the best Coachy."

Meanwhile, on the original post the four-time league-winning tactician shared his first words as he through up the famous peace sign.

“Thank you very much. It is all of a sudden thing and it is a privilege and honour to be here. Obviously in football, it is all about timing," said Hunt.

"Our club [Wits] was sold and there was an opportunity. I am excited to get working and see the capacity of the squad."
