The Citizens ran riot at Athlone Stadium on Monday, scoring four unanswered goals in the first half, with Jayiya scoring a treble inside 16 minutes – the fastest of the PSL era to date.
Chippa did pull a goal back late on, yet Jayiya’s heroics earned him the man-of-the-match award, an accolade which he dedicated to everyone but himself.
“It was all about the result today,” he told SuperSportTV. “We had to assert ourselves – the past two games we didn’t play well, so we had to come out today and play our football. This trophy is for my teammates and the management.
“We always have to focus on our own games. Whatever happens on the previous days is fine with us. The main thing was about winning at home and getting the three points, as we haven’t played well in a while, so this is for the supporters, and for us.”
When asked about City’s chances of winning the title, Jayiya was unnerved in his reply.
“It’s about one game at a time, and seeing how it goes,” he said.
City are now one point ahead of Bidvest Wits on the table, but have played two games more.
