Bucs lost 3-1 to eventual champions Mamelodi Sundowns in the semi-finals of the pre-season event on Saturday before losing 8-7 on penalties to African Stars in the third-place playoff yesterday.

The Sea Robbers will be eager to impress against Platinum Stars at the Maize Cup this weekend, having also recently tasted defeat at the hands of arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs in the Carling Black Label Champion Cup.

“Look, obviously we are disappointed and were looking to get a better outlook but at the end of the day it was about preparing for the new season. We used this match to try out various combinations," Carnell told the club's website.

“For us it is about building blocks… we have a puzzle to build and we have about two to two-and-a-half weeks to build this puzzle. We need to make sure we focus and look to see improvement.”

The former Bafana Bafana fullback added: “We have another friendly on Wednesday and another one the following week so we can get to a good rhythm where the coach wants to go.”

Pirates will start their 2016/17 Absa Premiership campaign against Golden Arrows at Orlando Stadium on August 24.
