Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has provided insight into the state of competition for the number one jersey between himself and Bruce Bvuma.

Nigerian shot-stopper Akpeyi, 33, has grabbed the number one jersey at Naturena in the absence of Itumeleng Khune due to injury.

Bvuma, 24, has remained the third choice at Chiefs despite making the trip to Egypt with South Africa for the Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

Akpeyi says Bvuma is still up there with the rest of the goalkeepers at Amakhosi and is challenging for a regular starting place.

"I think it's a tough and stiff competition in the goalkeeping department. It's a healthy one because he [Bvuma] has made everyone improve in that department," said Akpeyi.

"It's unfortunate one goalkeeper has to play and probably I am fortunate to be the coach's choice at this point in time. Remember, there was a time last season when Bvuma was playing and at this point in time I am the coach's choice to play."

Akpeyi has tallied up three yellow cards and if he is booked in the Telkom Knockout clash against Cape Town City in Cape Town on Saturday, he will miss the vital league game against Mamelodi Sundowns in Tshwane next weekend.
