READ: Akpeyi honoured by Olympic chance
The 29-year-old goalminder is part of Nigeria’s squad that will partake in the Games which run from 5-21 August.
This means that Akgpeyi will have little preparation time with Chippa, with the season set to kick-off on August 23.
However, Chippa communications manager Luthando Zibeko says the club can only be proud of their shot-stopper.
“He left on Saturday and the Chairman, the coach and everyone in the team wished him well. He’s one of the players who work very hard and we’re proud of him,” Zibeko tells snl24.com/kickoff.
“He has improved tremendously and deserves the opportunity and we think that tournament will do him a world of good.
Zibeko assured the club’s fans that the Nigerian goalie will be ready for the new season.
“Him going to the Olympics is going to inspire each and every player at Chippa United. He was with the team for a week and a half, he was training with us. So the week and a half did him a world of good in terms of understanding his teammates,” he concludes.
