Maritzburg United have shipped a former Mamelodi Sundowns target to Cape Town after earlier reports that they had released the player.

Former national under-23 star Deolin Mekoa has completed a short-term loan move to GladAfrica Championship outfit Ajax Cape Town, who have included an option to purchase.

Mekoa has spent the last two months in limbo since making his last appearance for Maritzburg at the start of December, before which he was afforded limited game time under Eric Tinkler.

The speedy winger rose to prominence with the Team of Choice after joining in 2014, as well as with the national under-23 side at the 2016 Rio Olympic games, where he came up against the likes of Brazil star Neymar.

The 26-year-old had become a bit-part player under Tinkler, who took over the reins from Muhsin Ertugral in January last year, and was thought to have been released by the club in September.

However, he has now secured a loan move to Ajax, where he could play a key role in helping them return to the Absa Premiership next season as they sit top of the first division log standings at present.

Makoa, who was linked with a move to Sundowns, was unveiled by the Urban Warriors on Wednesday, as they prepare to face Free State Stars at Goble Park stadium on Saturday afternoon (15h30).
