Sundowns won the Nedbank Cup on Saturday at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace to complete a domestic treble after having also won the other two trophies available to play for in domestic football – the MTN8 and the DStv Premiership.
In lifting the last piece of silverware available to play for in the 2021/22 season, The Brazilians have now pushed their trophy count in the PSL era years to 24.
Kaizer Chiefs remain stuck on 20 and sit in second place with Stuart Baxter the last coach to win them a trophy in May 2015 after which they have missed out on 28 trophies that they have been involved in.
The Brazilians have won 14 titles in the seven years that Chiefs have fired blanks.
Those 14 trophies count for six league titles, three Nedbnak Cups, two Telkom KnockOut trophies, the CAF Champions League, CAF Super CUP and the MTN8 in their shiny trophy cabinet.
With their success, Sundowns will be guaranteed of not being overtaken as the most successful club of the PSL era for at least another season.
Chiefs have three trophies to contest next season – the DStv Premiership, MTN8 and Nedbank Cup while Sundowns will have four as they are also playing in the CAF Champions League.
