AmaZulu were not able to record back-to-back wins in the DStv Premiership following a 1-1 draw against Marumo Gallants FC on Saturday evening.
Tercious Malepe was the sole change for Usuthu from their 4-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs, but Ayanda Nkili, Mpho Mvelase, Lehlohonolo Nonyane and Olivier Toure returned for Gallants.
Usuthu didn’t start off brightly and trailed on 12 minutes after Joseph Malongoane got on the end of Lebohang Mabotja’s delivery and beat Veli Mothwa.
AmaZulu were very close to draw level midway in the first half with a decent attempt from close-range by Dumisani Zuma, but it was cleared off the goal-line.
However, Gallants let their advantage go eight minutes to halftime as Dion riffled in a scorcher of an attempt from outside the area and give goalkeeper Washington Arubi no chance.
Bahlabane Ba Ntwa were given a golden chance to go back ahead in the last minute to halftime as Abbubaker Mobara gave away a foul in the box and won a penalty.
Though, Usuthu survived and went to the break on level terms after striker Ranga Chivaviro failed to beat Mothwa as he missed the resultant penalty kick.
AmaZulu made a substitution at the start of the second half in Sphesihle Maduna ahead of Ekstein, whereas Bahlabane Ba Ntwa didn’t make any alterations.
Dan Malesela’s side were a little bit on the back-foot and a surging header from substitute Maduna following Zuma’s cross brought Arubi to make a save.
Gallants eagerly wanted to enjoy a decent spell of momentum and to that introduced Lucky Mohomi as well as Thato Khiba from the substitutes bench.
Both sides struggled to unlock each other as the clocked ticked away and in the end played to a 1-1 draw in the city of Durban.
