DStv Premiership match report Cape Town City v Maritzburg United 16 August 2022

Cape Town City picked up their first point of the DStv Premiership season with a goalless draw against Maritzburg United on Tuesday evening.

Goalkeeper Darren Keet, Marc Van Heerden, Nathan Fasika, Thamsanqa Mkhize and Mduduzi Mdantsane were City’s changes after the loss to AmaZulu.

It was a relatively even start with Maritzburg unfortunate not to go ahead on 12 minutes when Brandon Theron popped up at the far post and fired a surging cross against the post.

City came up with n immediate response, where Craig Martin turned a challenge in the area and slammed a loose ball narrowly wide of the near post.

A desperate bit of defending from Maritzburg then denied City the lead moments apart after an outstretched save from King Ndlovu smothered Darwin Gonzalez’s cross-cum shot from an acute angle.

Following a pretty even first half, the Citizens threatened again and forced Ndlovu to scramble across his area and stop Bonginkosi Makume heading a floating cross into his own net.

Maritzburg came alive after a few minutes and displayed confidence on the ball and en-route to goal, as substitute Siboniso Conco drilled a low ball from outside the area narrowly off target.

The pressure continued to build on the Citizens and they nearly trailed when Friday Samu headed a telling delivery from a corner-kick against the upright midway in the second half.

City gave new signing Wayde Lekay his debut near the last 10 minutes, as the former TS Galaxy man replaced Khanyisa Mayo. It could’ve been a dream debut for Lekay after he opened space and got on the end of a cross into the area, but he headed wide in the end.

A lively closing seconds from the two sides followed,  although Maritzburg could have sealed the points after Samu’s snap-shot from close-range flew over as it finished goalless at Athlone Stadium.
