Lungelo Bhengu was given his full debut by the Team of Choice, with Tebogo Tlolane and Thabiso Kutumela preferred as Arrows showed up without Velemseni Ndwandwe.
Maritzburg should’ve taken the lead on 11 minutes from a header by Judas Moseamedi, but the crossbar rescued the host before Nazeer Allie missed the follow-up.
A substitution soon followed midway in the first half, as Pagiso Sanoka came on for the injured Bhengu who sadly saw his debut come to a halt.
Maritzburg broke the deadlock ten minutes to the interval with a well-taken side-footed finish from Thabiso Kutumela following a cutback from Moseamedi.
Abafana Besthende targeted a strong start to the second half, with a double change in Lindokuhle Mtshali and Thabani Zuke.
The equaliser arrived ten minutes in after Mtshali combined with a pull-back from the right-side of the area by Mutizwa to blast the top-corner.
Maritzburg threatened to regain the lead midway in the second half from a one-two between Moseamedi and Jose Ali Meza, but Sifiso Mlungwana got down to smother.
The hosts overturned the tie towards the last ten minutes after Mutizwa finished off a loose ball in the centre of the area with the visitors unable to clear their lines.
The Team of Choice came inches close to grab an equaliser in the closing minutes when a header from Sibusiso Hlubi hit the crossbar.
Abafana Besthende in the end held out the closing stages to pick up the victory, as Maritzburg remain in troubled territory down the bottom.
