Mamelodi Sundowns clinched back-to-back wins in the DStv Premiership for the first time this season after defeating Golden Arrows 2-1 on Saturday evening.

Sphelele Mkhulise, Sipho Mbule and Sifiso Ngobeni were given rare starts by Sundowns following their late win at Chippa United in midweek.

Masandawana started brightly in the opening 20 minutes and threatened through a first-time effort at the near post by Peter Shalulile, which goalkeeper Nkosingiphile Gumede smothered.

Abafana Besthende applied a low-block structure at the back in order to keep Masandawana at bay and played out on the counter-attack a little inside the closing period of the first half.

Sundowns probed regardless and broke clear a minute to halftime when Shalulile burst through the defence before being brought down by Gumede to win a penalty which he then converted for his sixth goal of the season.

The Brazilians could’ve doubled the lead seconds to the break after Shalulile teed-up Themba Zwane from outside the area following a ball over the top, but the latter fired wide.

Masandawana though surrendered their advantage two minutes in the second half and saw Pule Mmodi curl into the far corner from a tight angle around the area.

Sundowns restored their lead minutes later as Siyavuya Ndlovu scooped a cutback from Zwane into his own net after attempting to make a defensive clearance.

The visitors looked to draw level again and pushed the Brazilians back from smart deliveries in and around the defensive area, but to no avail in the end.

Masandawana though attempted to consolidate matters near the last ten minutes and brought on Lyle Lakay in the place of Ngobeni.

With time running out, Abafana Besthende refused to throw in the towel and had the Brazilians under intense pressure as shots from all angles came in an effort to get back on level terms.

Nonetheless, the Brazilians contained all thrown their way in the final stages and bagged the win to return to the top of the table.
