Cape Town City jumped to fifth spot on the DStv Premiership table with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Maritzburg United at the Harry Gwala Stadium.

City were able to re-call Lyle Lakay from the win over Sekhukhune United, whereas Maritzburg restored Bradley Cross and Jose Ali Meza as their notable changes.

There was a lot of forward play during the earlier stages, with City's Brice Ambina going close with an effort from outside the area that shaved the woodwork.

More pressure fell on the Team of Choice minutes later after a header in the centre of the area from Taahir Goedeman crashed the frame of the goal.

Both sides got chances thereafter to go ahead but neither defence were breached and kept each other at bay with tough challenges and fierce all-round battles.

City were out firing in the second half and could’ve gone in front when Bertrand Mani cut an opening from a tight angle and unleashed a strike that Renaldo Leaner deflected onto the upright.

The Team of Choice though went ahead in the 53rd minutes after Cross popped up in an unfamiliar position and tapped in Amadou Soukouna’s cutback from the left.

City launched their comeback off the bench a few minutes later and introduced Jaedin Rhdes for Darwin Gonzalez as well as Mduduzi Mdantsane for Goedeman.

The alterations worked midway in the second half when Mdantsane tapped in at the far post after he got on the end of Fielies' cross on 62 minutes.

Maritzburg were opened up again a minute later after Khanyisa Mayo’s first-time shot in the area drilled through the gloves of Leaner and rolled over the goal-line.

Leaner was unable to carry on playing after battling with a knock and made way for King Ndlovu in the remaining 15 minutes of the match.

The Team of Choice had a few chances to claw their way back in the closing minutes, but couldn’t get in and suffered a third straight loss in the league while City recorded a third successive win.
