Gallants sink CT City with late winner

Marumo Gallants FC jumped to 11th spot on the DStv Premiership table with a 2-1 win over Cape Town City on Saturday evening.

Just a single alteration from City after Tuesday’s come-from-behind win over Chippa United appeared in Nathan Fasika, while Gallants started Joseph Malongoane for the first time this season.

It was a dominant start by the travelling outfit and caused the Gallants to defend relentless to thwart attempts towards target by Kajally Drammeh.

However, City were dealt a set-back shortly after the half-hour mark and had Keanu Cupido come on off the bench for Fasika as the latter had landed awkwardly on the field of play.

The Citizens could’ve gone ahead ten minutes before halftime from a clear opportunity by Luke Daniels, but the young forward shot straight at goalkeeper Washington Arubi.

It is a missed that would come back to haunt the Citizens four minutes to the break as Ranga Chivaviro who had just come on for Sibusiso Sibeko gave Gallants the lead from a ball by Sizwe Mdlinzo.

Further alterations from the Citizens at the interval came in Khanyisa Mayo on for Daniels with the purpose to chase down and overturn the outcome of the match.

This arrival of Mayo, who were key in the win over Chippa, energized the Citizens and instantly brought a lot of the forward men like Jaedin Rhodes in possession.

City pushed tirelessly ahead of fulltime and got their just rewards as Wayde Lekay pounced on a ball from Mpho Makola and slotted past Arubi.

Marumo stole all the points in additional time after Chivaviro finished off Molangoane’s assist and completed his brace and furthermore steered the host to victory.
