Swallows FC boosted their survival hopes in the DStv Premiership with a 1-0 win over Sekhukhune United on Saturday evening.

Babina Noko were unchanged from their emphatic win over Baroka FC, with Fawaaz Basadien, Dillon Solomons and Mwape Musonda among the changes for Swallows.

The Dube Birds battled to get going early on and were provided the chance to go ahead from a thumping free-kick by Tshediso Patjie at the midway point, but Thela Thela saved.

Sekhukhune managed to orchestrate another chance on 34 minutes from a rasping header in the centre of the area by Justin Shonga which Thela smothered effectively.

It wasn’t all the host though, as the Dube Birds began to venture into the other end of the pitch minutes thereafter through amongst others Monnapule Saleng and Givemore Khupe.

Swallows nabbed the lead five minutes in the second half when Musonda received a cutback left of the area and slotted in from close-range, while Vusimuzi Mncube entered for Sekhukhune.

The Dube Birds were instantly searching for a second through a powerful attempt right of the area by Siphesihle Mbhele, but he was smothered by goalkeeper Toaster Nsabata.

Sekhukhune started to up the ante after a disjointed opening to the second period and were nearly rewarded when Mncube battered the woodwork on 66 minutes off a thumping strike.

Babina Noko didn’t stop to probe the goal of the Dube Birds twelve minutes thereafter, as Yusuf Maart fashioned an opening from range and brought Thela to quick reflexes.

However, the Dube Birds were closest to a second in the last ten minutes through a snap header from Ruzaigh Gamildien but it was smothered by Nsabata.

Swallows were able to steer clear of the threats provided by Sekhukhune and grabbed a crucial victory.
