DStv Premiership match report Stellenbosch v Sekhukhune United 01 April 2022

Stellenbosch's search for their first victory in the calendar year continued after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Sekhukhune United on Saturday afternoon.

Stellies made three changes from their 2-2 draw with Royal AM, as they called Jayden Adams, Kganyane Letsoenyo and Mogamad De Goede while Sekhukhune were without shot-stopper Toaster Nsabata and goalkeeper Ayanda Dlamini got his first start of the season, alongside the return of Justin Shonga.

Babina Noko had a dream start after Shonga gave them the lead in the 12th minute with a spectacular over-head in the box that sailed into the top corner after a launched ball by Roderick Kabwe.

Steve Barker's charges took time to get into the game, as they could not find their way through Sekhukhune's midfield and it took them up until ten minutes before the half-time break to test Dlamini in goal as Junior Mendieta had a low cracking strike parried wide.

Stellies were a different side in the second stanza, as they pressed Sekhukhune high up the pitch and they were rewarded on the hour-mark after Juan Ortiz got to the end of a cross by Sibongiseni Mthethwa ahead of Dlamini at the back post and squeezed a shot into a gaping net.

MacDonald Makhubedu made a double attacking change after that as Tshediso Patjie and Evans Rusike replaced both Thabang Kobela and Chibuike Ohizu.

The home side remained on the front foot and Adams was unfortunate not to give them the lead just after that with a low curling strike that beat Dlamini but came off the base of the post.

The game was there for the taking in the closing stages, with the wind a factor but neither side could capitalise and they shared the spoils.
